Naples Daily News Spanish-language TV program asks 'Que Pasa SW Florida!' Saturday, September 1, 2001 By BRIGID O'MALLEY Naples Daily News Everything that's happening in Southwest Florida, from news to travel to entertainment - all in Spanish for the region's growing Hispanic population - is coming to local television. Starting Sunday, Sept. 9, "Que Pasa SW Florida!" airs in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties on WEVU-TV/UPN channel 8 at 6 p.m. > /StaffThe first television program in local television history broadcast entirely in Spanish for the more than 100,000 Hispanics throughout Southwest Florida is meant to give that community information that they need - and in their language."There's been a dramatic growth in the Hispanic community and we want to bring a real link to that community and this is it," said Frank Rodriguez, a local businessman and civic activist who is one of the co-hosts of the weekly, 30-minute "Que Pasa SW Florida!" He said they've been successful in getting many Naples businesses to advertise because they're looking for a way to tap into the growing Hispanic market. Right now, there are six Hispanic newspapers and two Hispanic radio stations that the program will join as media for the Spanish speakers. "We've had a great response," said Jose Marquez of Naples-based MHTV, the director and one of the producers of the program. "It's pioneering something new in town and I think people are really interested in it." Jose and Lila Marquez, who have worked in national and international television production, also produce an English language television show called "Take a Look," which airs locally. They put their expertise to work for the new, groundbreaking Hispanic show. The premiere, taped Friday, features an interview with Jorge Aguilera, a commander with Collier County Emergency Medical Services, who shares information about preparing for hurricanes and how to stay safe as well as telling viewers what services are offered in the county. "It's a start. There's a growing Hispanic community out there that a lot of times this information doesn't get to," Aguilera said. Segments on issues affecting the local Hispanic community, interviews with local success stories in business, sports and entertainment as well as an "action line" to help address problems will be parts of future lineups. Look for the show to get interviews with big-time talent such as Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez when they're in concert nearby. "We'll get them to say, 'Que Pasa SW Florida!' " Lila Marquez said.
